Chapter 16

v. 17-18

We are instructed, because all things are from Christ, through Christ, and to Christ, to watch out for those people who create divisions and obstacles contrary to the teaching we have learned (what has been presented through the book of Romans, the true Gospel).

Someone who is divisive or creates obstacles for true faith will not necessarily do so on purpose and will not necessarily be abrasive about creating divisions or obstacles. In most cases, I think the people are outwardly nice, but are ultimately concerned with their own appetites rather than serving our Lord. In fact, Paul here says that these are the people who are prone to flattery. We are instructed to avoid them because they will only be a hindrance to our own service before Christ. So, we look for genuine churches that are not full of divisive people and where obstacles are not being created. It turns out that the proclamation of the true gospel is essential to the existence of a genuine local church.
